Foothill Municipal Water District is developing a program to promote water conservation and more efficient use of water. This program may include rebates, educational programs on water wise landscaping, cash-for-grass programs and more. The conservation program will be funded from the District’s regular operations budget.

There are many ways that consumers can make more efficient use of water, thus conserving a resource too precious to waste, without affecting their lifestyles.

Since the vast majority of water use is for outdoor irrigation, this provides the greatest opportunity for more efficient use of water.

Some outdoor water-saving tips:

  • Using water-smart native plants.
  • Replacing lawns with attractive landscaping that requires less water.
  • Properly using and maintaining sprinkler systems.
  • Using high-tech, weather-based controller sprinklers.
  • Watering for less time and less frequently, and in the early morning or evening. Most landscapes are over-watered, which harms plants.
  • Sweeping instead of washing down paved areas.

Indoors, you can save water by:

  • Fixing leaks quickly.
  • Installing low-flow showerheads.
  • Taking shorter showers.
  • Taking showers instead of baths.
  • Replacing water-hogging toilets with lower-flush models.
  • Using water-efficient appliances.
  • Turning off the water when you are brushing your teeth.
  • Taking other common sense steps to avoid wasting water.
