Rules:

1. Only front yard residential landscapes can qualify.
   
   
2. Entries must demonstrate:
   • Attractive use of water-wise landscaping,
   • Efficiency of the irrigation system including overall system design and watering criteria of the chosen plants, and
   • Good maintenance practices.
     
     
3. All landscape entries must receive water service from one of Foothill Municipal Water District’s retail agencies. For a listing, click here.
   
   
4. The decisions of the judges are final.
   
   
5. Entry images will become the property of Foothill Municipal Water District and may be used for future marketing activities.
   
   
6. The competition committee reserves the right not to issue awards in the event of insufficient entries.  (Minimum 10 entries.)
   
   
7. Water agency employees within Foothill’s boundaries and their families are not eligible to enter, nor are prior contest winners.
   
   
8. Deadline to enter is April 13, 2012.  Judging will take place May 5, 2012.  In case of inclement weather, the date may be moved.

Judging:

Judges will consider the following elements of water-wise landscaping:

Overall Attractiveness:  Curb appeal; aesthetic use of color, form, and texture; Environmentally sensitive use of hardscape.

Appropriate plant selection:  California-friendly plant palette, functional turf (serves a purpose such as reducing dust and mud problems, playing a sport or group activities), and functional landscape (such as runoff control, attract wildlife and edible garden).

Design: Artistic and practical layout of plant materials and hardscape elements with consideration of horticultural requirements; permeable ground cover or paving; fire-wise landscape, as needed.

Appropriate maintenance:  Use of mulch; weeds kept to a minimum; plants neat, tidy and attractive.

Efficient methods of irrigation:  Appropriate irrigation design and equipment designed to reduce runoff.

Contest Awards:

Three prizes will be given in the Foothill Municipal Water District's service area that covers La Canada, La Crescenta, Altadena and includes Kinneloa Irrigation District customers.
